Chapter 3: Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables
Pair of linear equations and graphs
A pair of linear equations in two variables, aโx + bโy + cโ = 0 and aโx + bโy + cโ = 0, is shown on a graph by two lines.
(i) The lines intersect: one solution, consistent. Condition: aโ/aโ โ bโ/bโ.
(ii) The lines coincide: infinitely many solutions, dependent and consistent. Condition: aโ/aโ = bโ/bโ = cโ/cโ.
(iii) The lines are parallel: no solution, inconsistent. Condition: aโ/aโ = bโ/bโ โ cโ/cโ.
Substitution method
(1) Write one variable in terms of the other from one equation. (2) Put it in the other equation and solve the one-variable equation. (3) Put the value back to find the other variable. If step 2 gives a true statement (like 18 = 18) there are infinitely many solutions, and if it gives a false statement (like โ4 = 0) there is no solution.
Elimination method
Multiply the equations by suitable numbers so that the coefficients of one variable become equal. Then add or subtract the equations to remove that variable. Find the remaining variable and then the other one.
How to solve word problems
Take the unknowns as x and y, form two equations from the statements, solve by any method, and finally check the answer against the conditions of the problem. For example, if the digits of a number add up to 9 and nine times the number equals twice the number with the digits reversed, the number is 18.
Important questions
Q1. What is the general form of a pair of linear equations in two variables?
aโx + bโy + cโ = 0 and aโx + bโy + cโ = 0, where aโ, bโ, cโ, aโ, bโ, cโ are real numbers.
Q2. What are consistent, inconsistent and dependent pairs?
A pair that has a solution is consistent. A pair with no solution is inconsistent. A pair with infinitely many solutions is dependent (and consistent).
Q3. State the three possible graphs of a pair of linear equations.
(i) The lines intersect at a point: unique solution (consistent). (ii) The lines are parallel: no solution (inconsistent). (iii) The lines coincide: infinitely many solutions (dependent).
Q4. Write the conditions for the three cases using the ratios aโ/aโ, bโ/bโ, cโ/cโ.
Intersecting: aโ/aโ โ bโ/bโ. Coincident: aโ/aโ = bโ/bโ = cโ/cโ. Parallel: aโ/aโ = bโ/bโ โ cโ/cโ.
Q5. Will the lines 5x โ 4y + 8 = 0 and 7x + 6y โ 9 = 0 intersect, be parallel or coincide?
aโ/aโ = 5/7 and bโ/bโ = โ4/6. They are not equal, so the lines intersect at a point.
Q6. What kind of lines are 9x + 3y + 12 = 0 and 18x + 6y + 24 = 0?
9/18 = 3/6 = 12/24 = 1/2. All three ratios are equal, so the lines are coincident.
Q7. What kind of lines are 6x โ 3y + 10 = 0 and 2x โ y + 9 = 0?
6/2 = 3 and โ3/โ1 = 3 are equal, but 10/9 is different, so the lines are parallel.
Q8. Is the pair 2x โ 3y = 8 and 4x โ 6y = 9 consistent or inconsistent?
Write them as 2x โ 3y โ 8 = 0 and 4x โ 6y โ 9 = 0. 2/4 = โ3/โ6 = 1/2, but the ratio of c-values 8/9 is different, so the lines are parallel and the pair is inconsistent.
Q9. What kind of pair are 5x โ 3y = 11 and โ10x + 6y = โ22?
5/โ10 = โ3/6 = 11/โ22 = โ1/2. All the ratios are equal, so the lines coincide and the pair is dependent (consistent).
Q10. The length of a rectangular garden is 4 m more than its width and half its perimeter is 36 m. Find its dimensions.
Let the width be x and the length x + 4. Then x + (x + 4) = 36, so x = 16. Width is 16 m and length is 20 m.
Q11. 5 pencils and 7 pens cost โน50, while 7 pencils and 5 pens cost โน46. Find the cost of one pencil and one pen.
Let a pencil cost x and a pen y: 5x + 7y = 50 and 7x + 5y = 46. Solving gives x = 3 and y = 5. A pencil costs โน3 and a pen costs โน5.
Q12. 10 students of Class X took part in a quiz and the number of girls is 4 more than the number of boys. Find the number of boys and girls.
Let girls be x and boys y: x + y = 10 and x โ y = 4. Solving gives x = 7, y = 3. So there are 7 girls and 3 boys.
Q13. State the steps of the substitution method and solve 7x โ 15y = 2, x + 2y = 3.
Steps: (1) write one variable in terms of the other from one equation, (2) put it in the other equation and solve the one-variable equation, (3) put the value back to get the other variable. Here x = 3 โ 2y, then 7(3 โ 2y) โ 15y = 2 gives y = 19/29 and x = 49/29.
Q14. Solve by substitution: x + y = 14, x โ y = 4.
Putting x = 14 โ y gives 14 โ y โ y = 4, so y = 5 and x = 9.
Q15. The difference between two numbers is 26 and one number is three times the other. Find the numbers.
Let the larger be x and the smaller y: x โ y = 26 and x = 3y. Then 3y โ y = 26, so y = 13 and x = 39.
Q16. A coach buys 7 bats and 6 balls for โน3800, and later 3 bats and 5 balls for โน1750. Find the cost of each bat and ball.
Let a bat cost x and a ball y: 7x + 6y = 3800 and 3x + 5y = 1750. Solving gives x = 500, y = 50. A bat costs โน500 and a ball โน50.
Q17. A taxi fare has a fixed charge plus a charge per km. For 10 km the fare is โน105 and for 15 km it is โน155. Find the fixed charge, the charge per km and the fare for 25 km.
Let the fixed charge be x and the rate per km y: x + 10y = 105 and x + 15y = 155. Subtracting gives 5y = 50, so y = 10 and x = 5. Fare for 25 km = 5 + 25 ร 10 = โน255.
Q18. State the steps of the elimination method and solve x + y = 5, 2x โ 3y = 4.
Steps: (1) multiply the equations so that the coefficients of one variable become equal, (2) add or subtract to remove that variable, (3) find the remaining variable and then the other. Here multiply the first equation by 3 to get 3x + 3y = 15. Adding gives 5x = 19, so x = 19/5 and y = 6/5.
Q19. Five years ago Nuri was thrice as old as Sonu. Ten years later Nuri will be twice as old as Sonu. Find their ages.
Let Nuri be x and Sonu y: x โ 5 = 3(y โ 5) and x + 10 = 2(y + 10). Simplifying: x โ 3y = โ10 and x โ 2y = 10. Solving gives y = 20, x = 50. Nuri is 50 years old and Sonu is 20.
Q20. Meena withdrew โน2000 and got 25 notes in all, of โน50 and โน100 only. How many notes of each kind did she get?
