What is a matra?
When a vowel joins a consonant, its shape changes. This changed shape is called a matra. The matra of आ is ा, of इ is ि, of ई is ी, of उ is ु and of ऊ is ू.
Examples
क + ा = का, क + ि = कि, क + ी = की, क + ु = कु, क + ू = कू.
